Nasinu Town Council has accumulated $8.8 million in rate arrears.

The council revealed this yesterday as it expects to collect $4m in arrears from 11,137 ratepayers by the end of the year.

“The council has collected more than $2 million – $2,876,199.15 and we are expecting to collect more by the end of this year,” Council chief executive officer Akhtar Ali said.

He said lack of rate payments affected the council’s operations.

“We provide services to residents of Nasinu which depends on the rates we receive on time.

“Our ability to provide effective and efficient services to our ratepayers is impacted by lack of rates not paid on time.”

He said every year people were expected to have arrears, but some people did not pay anything at all.

“People who fail to pay their rates to the council are reminded with a 30-day notice.

“If people fail to pay, then the case will end up in the Small Claims Tribunal or the council will place charge on properties.
