Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says Ro Teimumu Kepa’s election analysis is flawed and false. Speaking in his right of reply in Parliament yesterday, he said the Leader of the Opposition had drawn up a false analysis of last year’s general election. Ro Teimumu said that the voter turnout in 2006 could not be compared to last year’s figures because the voting age was lowered to 18 from 21. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: “ How flawed is that. Voter turnout is based on the percentage of registered voters who actually turn out to vote. So you can have 10 registered voters, 9 of them turned up meaning 90 per cent turnout. You can have 1million people registered and you get 100,000 people who turn up and you have 10 per cent of the people who voted.” Ro Teimumu also talked about the MOG (Multinational Observer Group). “The Honourable Leader of the Opposition who is not here this morning, completely drew up a false analysis,” he said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also said that while Government members of  parliament and ministers focused on taking the country forward and accepting that there were flaws which were being fixed, Opposition members were busy trying to re-write history. “The other side of the House, Madam Speaker, they were steeped in what I would call hypocrisy and not accepting the facts,” he said. “They were economical with the truth, this side of the House, Madam Speaker, told the truth.” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also noted that no Opposition MP spoke about the events of 1987 and 2000. “They only focused on 2006. He questioned whether this silence was because many sitting in the Opposition had in one way or the other benefitted from or endorsed the coups of 1987 and 2000. On unemployment, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Government accepted that there was unemployment, a fact that existed in all countries. He said the issue should be working together to come to a solution to unemployment. “In the same way, they talk about unemployment, It would be very hard to find any economy anywhere in the world that has full employment. They talk as if that unemployment is the only curse of this Government,” he said.
