The President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, this week visited students in the Lau Group, Yasawa and Rotuma.

The Head of State, met students in his capacity as UNAIDS special representative for the Pacific.

He reminded them about the importance of focusing on education so that they can become better citizens and contribute to Fiji’s national development.

Ratu Epeli spoke to the students about HIV/AIDS and its ill effects and raised concerns on the increasing number of cases of HIV infections among young people in Fiji.

“There is a strong need for increased education on HIV prevention that should be taken into account by policymakers.

“Government and other stakeholders dealing with HIV and AIDS advocacy will continue to intensify, but more support is now needed by individuals,” Ratu Epeli said.

He stressed that making HIV/AIDS awareness programmes accessible was an important tool to combat this global epidemic.

“We must talk about this in our homes and with our parents. Parents must start talking about HIV/AIDS to their children so they are aware about this deadly virus.

“The Fijian Government is currently footing bills for HIV/AIDS and we (Fijians) must always commend Government for its approach in taking a stand for those living with HIV/AIDS.

“Make sure that we all talk about this because until a cure is found – HIV/AIDS is here to stay and all we can do is make sure that we are all safe and you, our future leaders, make a stand against HIV/AIDS,” Ratu Epeli said

He called on students to think about their families, their communities and the nation and make use of education opportunities provided by Government.

Ratu Epeli visited Beqa Yanuca Secondary School, Rukua Raviravi Primary School, Yasawa High School and Rotuma High School this week.
