More than 500 families from around Nasinu were donated meat by a group of businessmen from Turkey yesterday.

The assistance was part of the Eid-ul-Adha celebration marked by Muslims around the world.

The meat distribution at Nasinu was at the Valelevu Hart.

Turkish NGO, Pacific Countries Social and Economic Solidarity Association (PASIAD) businessman Agama Stamen said this was the first time they helped Fijians.

“We have been helping other countries around the world and this year we chose to come to Fiji and distribute meat to those in need. This is part of the religious festival where we slaughter cows and goats and distribute meat to the people,” Mr Stamen said.

“We bought the meat from Taua in Rakiraki which cost us $20,000 and distributed along the Suva, Nadi, Nausori and Nasinu corridor in the hope to feed 700 families who are in need of help.

“We will not stop here because this is our first time to visit Fiji. We will come back and distribute meat for Fiji because we found the people here to be very friendly and full of respect,” he said.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar commended the group.

“They have given out the generous gift packs and close to 500 plus are our Social Welfare recipients,” Ms Akbar said.

“We are only here to facilitate the generous donation and it’s their contribution towards a very worthy cause which is in line with one of the principles of Islam – a festival that we have just celebrated where we sacrifice an animal, mostly goats and cows.

“Our belief is that everybody and anybody can celebrate with us and today we are thankful that the group could help us give back to the communities because there are a lot of people under the Social Welfare who need help,” she said.
