The new Village by-laws have been completed and would soon be handed out to provincial councils for comments and proposed amendments.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for iTauikei Affairs Board Apakuki Kurusiga said the by-laws aimed to ensure iTaukei protocols were followed in iTaukei villages.

He said the by-laws empowered traditional chiefs or leaders in their leadership roles, as they would work together with Government to ensure that the Laws of Fiji were respected in all aspects.

“It will resurrect traditional customs, protocol and culture, which Fiji is known for, and enforce hygiene and peaceful social interactions within community members,” he said.

Before the introduction of Village By-laws, the ministry had surveyed village boundaries.

The survey team had completed the Lomaiviti province and would start in Lau in October.

With the completion of the village boundaries, he said there would be no more disputes on village landownership.
