13yrs for Rape

A 56-year-old farmer of Tailevu was yesterday sentenced to 13 years imprisonment for two counts of defilement and one count of rape.

Shiu Balak was sentenced by High Court Judge, Justice Paul Madigan at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

The court yesterday heard that between January 2014 and July 2014 Balak raped the victim who was then 12-years 11-months-old on one occasion. Justice Madigan ordered that Balak serve a minimum of 11 years before being eligible for parole for all three offences.

Rape suspect

A 20 year old man, Meni Raitekiteki, who is charged with raping a 74-year-old woman has been further remanded in custody.

He appeared before Justice Vinsent Perera at the Suva High Court yesterday.

The matter has been adjourned to the October 9th.

Corrections officers

Two Fiji Corrections Service officers have been further remanded in custody for allegedly raping a female corrections officer.

It is alleged that newly recruited officers, Meli Sebua and Nasoni Raburau committed the offence outside the Suva Corrections Centre last week.

The matter will be called on October 23.
