Progress of industries cannot be at the expense of the environment or our future generations, says Industry and Trade Minister Faiyaz Siddiq Koya.

Speaking at the Top Executive conference yesterday, Mr Koya said Government would provide enabling environment but progress cannot be at the expense of others.

“Therefore, all investments whether domestic and foreign will be going through an environmental sustainability test, in line with the Fijian Green Growth Framework that was launched earlier this year,” Mr Koya said.

He said to achieve the perfect investment climate depended upon an entire ecosystem of good policies, investments in human and physical capital. “However, everything cannot be achieved quickly. Instead it requires a systematic approach, which has been undertaken by the Fijian Government thus far.”

He said that the Bainimarama Government’s overall vision is to develop Fiji as a vibrant, dynamic and internationally competitive economy that serves as the hub of the Pacific.

“I must add here that this vision cannot be achieved by the Government alone, we need strategic partners, such as, the private sector and civil society.

Reducing cost of doing business:

To reduce the cost of doing business, Mr Koya said, Government was reducing the requirements for establishment of businesses to essentials and remove any procedures or requirements that are not necessary.

“It is important that business registrations are done with single point of contact.

“Furthermore, we are in the process of undertaking further discussions with the Economic Development Board in Singapore to learn from their experience of initiatives that can be implemented in Fiji to enhance and streamline our investment approvals and promotions.”
