Members of the Soroptimist International (SI) Ba were yesterday reminded to take responsibility towards the elimination of violence against women.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar reminded women of their responsibilities during the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of SI Ba yesterday.

“As women, we need to rise, dance, demand for justice to change perceptions and attitudes by joining hands in society,” the minister said.

“The women are daughters, wives, mothers, aunts, sisters, nieces, grandmothers, neighbours and friends, so we all have responsibilities to protect girls and women from gender-based violence.”

Ms Akbar said Government, with other institutions, were also responsible in terms of sending the message to grassroots level.

“As leaders in institutions, communities and households, we all have responsibilities to protect women and girls from all forms of harmful practises.

“As women, we must learn to stand up for our rights which are very carefully knitted into our Constitution.

“We should break the silence over sexual abuse in the home, school, office and other public places. Your efforts will be making a difference in the lives of many.

“Colleagues, it is crucial that we treat every day as a day to eliminate violence against women in order to uphold women and children’s rights. It is time to reflect on the past accomplishment and to recognise the current efforts underway and to acknowledge the many challenges that still lie ahead,” Ms Akbar said.

Ms Akbar also donated $1000 to the organisation.

SI Fiji president Maria Doton commended Ms Akbar in her efforts to help women and girls in Fiji.
