A-G Slams Apted On Law Claims

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has slammed comments by a Suva lawyer, Jon Apted about making laws.

Mr Apted claimed over the weekend that laws were uncertain because there was no public consultation.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that was what he is advising his clients.  He labelled Mr Apted’s statement as irresponsible.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: “It is very unfortunate that you have a supposed senior lawyer giving a legal opinion that is tainted by politics.

“All laws that have been passed by the Fijian Parliament are acts of Parliament and therefore legally binding and applicable. There is no question of uncertainty.

“So it is very, very irresponsible for any senior lawyer to be supposedly giving a legal opinion that is premised on a political interpretation. Standing Order 51 has been used by other Parliaments and even when we have used it, bills have been referred to committees at which members of the public can make submissions or at the very least these bills are debated in Parliament.

“If you have lawyers giving this type of advice, where is their loyalty, their loyalty to Fiji, loyalty to the Fijian people and the Fijian economy? Or are they simply loyal  to their own political  ambitions or agendas?”
