Ruling On SODELPA Money Dispute Today

A ruling on the SODELPA’s controversial $225,000 parliamentary allocation will be made today.

It will say who should have received the money, party headquarters or its parliamentary wing in the Opposition Office. It’s in an inquiry report to be handed to the party’s new Management Board in Suva.

The inquiry board, chaired by Anare Jale, had conducted an inquiry into a so-called Gaunavinaka confidential report critical of the governance of the Opposition Office and the leadership of the Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa.

The report claimed that the $225,000 should have gone to party headquarters first. Instead it went directly to the Opposition Office. The party would have to account for it because it is understood the cheque was written to it. If it was written to the Opposition Office the amount would be $270,000 including the $45,000 for the National Federation Party.

The dispute over the money highlighted the financial challenges that the party has been going through.

The report also claimed the party had paid back the amount it borrowed from a financier.

The party’s financial report came under fire in the party’s recent special general meeting because it lacked details and a breakdown of the expenditure.

Pio Tabaiwalu, SODELPA’s general secretary, said he could not comment because he was not authorised. Mr Jale could not be reached to comment.
