Alleged Fake Doctor Fronts Nasinu Court
Param Vir Maharaj had alllegedly been operating as a private medical practitioner under the alias ‘Dr Robert’ from 2014.
Maharaj, 51, of Omkar Road, Narere, appeared at the Nasinu Magistrates Court yesterday.
Maharaj, allegedly ran a bogus medical practice at his Narere home, under the alias ‘Dr Robert.’
He has been charged with one count of using the title ‘doctor’ without being registered under Section 34 of the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act.
He is also charged with one count of practising and professing to be a medical practitioner without being registered as one.
His third charge is one count of obtaining financial advantage where he allegedly took $800 from a Barbara Begum.
This incident allegedly took place between September 6 and 26.
The prosecutors objected to bail stating it was a serious offence and Maharaj was likely to re-offend or interfere with witnesses and was a flight risk since his family was overseas.
Defence counsel Parmendra Kumar argued that his client had been in custody for more than 48 hours and had presented two sureties for bail.
Magistrate Sufia Hamza however refused the $1000 bail saying a proper bail application needs to be made with the support of affidavits while in remand.
Maharaj will re-appear in court on October 19.
