Despite the 44-26 loss to New South Wales Country, Fiji Residents coach Joe Rabele is happy with how  the players performed as they build up to the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The NSW Country team are assisting the Fijian National Rugby League (FNRL) in developing the Fiji Residents team.

“Development is something we are focusing on and this game will surely help in developing their skills,” Rabele said.

“We need games like this to bring out the potential in players.

“A few players stood out like Richard Fiu who is playing for the Fiji Residents for the first time.

“The visitors really put up a good performance. I am proud of how the boys stood their ground, It took a while for them to settle down in the first half. But in the second half they really showed what they are capable of.

“Our next game will be at Lawaqa Park at 3pm on Friday.”

Meanwhile, NSW Country coach Jamie Feeney applauded the Fijian Residents.

“The Fijian Residents fought hard and showed us how tough they can be,”Feeney said.

“I’m a tough coach and I’m not happy when 26 points scored against us.

“The Fijian Residents are very strong and play unstructured rugby whereas we are taught to defend against structured rugby.

“So it was difficult for us to play against them, but overall it was a good game and we all learn and take the positives from it.”
