A SODELPA board of inquiry has confirmed most of the issues raised in the controversial Gaunavinaka confidential report.

The board’s report was submitted to the new management board meeting in Suva last night. Its chairperson Anare Jale could not be reached to comment yesterday.

The Gaunavinaka report was critical of the governance of the Opposition Office and the leadership of Ro Teimumu Kepa, the Opposition leader. The party’s new management board agreed on a new way forward to avoid the governance problems highlighted by the Gaunavinaka report.

The first step agreed last night was to recruit suitably qualified staff to raise the standard and allow the party’s parliamentary wing to perform efficiently in its service delivery. Current staff will have to reapply for their jobs. The issue of who should be responsible for the $225,000 parliamentary party funding was still being discussed last night.

Among the problems raised by the Gaunavinaka report include the lack of consultation between the Opposition Office and the party and the absence of a clear strategic plan for the 2018 general election.

Ro Teimumu and party president Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu were not present. Ratu Naiqama was getting ready to leave for the United States where he will be the guest of SODELPA members there during the Independence Day celebrations. One of the three-vice-presidents, Savenaca Kamikamica, chaired the meeting last night.

The meeting started at 7pm and it was still going on after 10.30pm.

The management board also discussed the disciplinary committee composition to recommend the actions that need to be taken.

A lawyer and an auditor, not members of the party, were appointed as members of the committee. This will give it its independence and transparency. A move to appoint Ratu  Jone Kubuabola as a member of the committee was defeated because he could be a candidate for party leader after Ro Teimumu.

The party will issue a full statement today.
