The villagers of Bua Lomanikoro in Bua, Vanua Levu, will get a new bridge that will link them to the mainland.

The Fiji Roads Authority revealed this during the Bua District meeting yesterday at Bua Lomanikoro.

A suspension bridge, which was the only means of access to the village,  had broken off due to old age.

Since then the villagers and students had to use a bamboo raft to across the river. Majority of the villagers are farmers and depend heavily on selling their produce at the Nabouwalu or Labasa markets.

Village headman Waisea Rabutakoli said the new bridge would make life easier for them, especially the students.

He said he had alerted the relevant authorities about the broken bridge but nothing had been done about it to this day.

“Students are mostly affected because they travel daily to school and also villagers who want to go to Nabouwalu or Labasa Town,” he said.

“Most of the villagers are market vendors and they need a bridge to make crossing easier to transport their produce to Nabouwalu or the Labasa Market”.

The FRA will call for tenders this month.
