Eight Years For Rape

Nacani Demo and Damasino Levi were yesterday sentenced by the High Court in Lautoka to eight years imprisonment for raping a young mother.

They were ordered to serve a minimum of five years before being eligible for parole.

It was alleged that the 20-year-old mother was returning home from a family function when the two accused, who had attended the same function, found the young mother along the way.

Both men, who were in their 30s and were in defacto relationships, took their turns in raping the woman.

According to Defence submissions Demo was a father of two and the sole breadwinner of the family whereas Levi’s background was no different.

Mitigating factors stated that both accused were first-offenders, had clear records and were young.

Also they had co-operated with the Police during the investigations.

The aggravating factor was that the two accused took the advantage of the naivety and vulnerability of the complainant when she was alone on her way home at night.

Justice Aruna Aluthge while giving out the sentence said having considered the accused’s future prospects and desire for rehabilitation the two accused would only serve five years before they were eligible for parole.
