Luveni: Time To Reflect On Our Past
Fiji Day is a time for us to reflect on our past, says the Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni.
While officiating at the opening of the Fiji Day celebration at Bidesi ground, Laucala Bay, Suva, yesterday, Dr Luveni said the journey as a nation for the past 45 years had not been easy.
“We have had our fair share of turmoil and troubles and we were working through our many challenges focusing on the goals of ensuring that all our people, regardless of whom they are, were given a fair share of a decent life,” Dr Luveni said.
“Fiji has a rich and proud history from which we should draw our inspiration. Today also must be a day we are inspired by our forefathers, our leaders, our families and all those who have impacted our lives, so that our lives today are better than what it was yesterday.”
More than 100 students from 11 Suva schools and about 200 civil servants from various Government ministries were part of the celebration yesterday.
Dr Luveni urged the students to place an importance on their education in a bid to contribute positively to their communities.
She commended the business communities and the private sector for being a significant part of our nation’s development and growth.
“You have proved to be a critical part of Government in its quest to govern for the good of our country,” she said.
The theme for this year’s Fiji Day celebration is ‘Togetherness in Harmony for a Prosperous Fiji’.
