Three senior officers who could become Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will attend  war colleges before the final selection is made.

This was confirmed yesterday by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during the Fiji Day parade at Buckhurst Ground, Laucala Bay, Suva.

Mr Bainimarama was reacting to a question about Colonel Jone Kalouniwai’s chief of staff post at the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

He said Col Kalouniwai would be returning to the country and would be sent to a war college for further study as he was a candidate for the Commander’s post.

Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho will later in the year go to an Australian war college for a year.

Mr Bainimarama also mentioned Lt-Col Sapenasa Motufaga’s name.

He said in the meantime Commodore Viliame Naupoto would continue as Acting Commander.

In an earlier interview, Commodore Naupoto said he wanted senior officers who were contenders to the Commander’s post to attend war college, the highest military institution.

He said past commanders had attended staff college.

Commodore Naupoto said he would hold the fort until all the potential candidates return from the war college.

Meanwhile, Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho said the RFMF was mourning the death of Major Setareki Bogidrau.

The funeral will be held next Wednesday.
