‘We’re Proud To Be Fijians’
We are proud to be called Fijians and to celebrate this day as one, said three Yat Sen Primary School Year Eight students.
Denzel Aryam, Tieri Niurou and Desmond Yee were among students from 11 schools in Suva, civil servants and members of the public who marched through Laucala Bay yesterday morning during the Fiji Day celebration.
Niurou, 13, who is from Rotuma, said she was happy to be known as a Fijian and joining students from other races yesterday.
Denzel, also 13, said; “It was a celebration of freedom in Fiji – 45 years on after gaining Independence from Britain.
“This day makes me so proud to be called a Fijian no matter what,” he said.
Yee, 14, who is of Chinese descent, said he was happy that being a Fijian-born, he has learned a lot about being a Fijian.
“I have been able to learn its culture and interact well and I am happy that we are also called Fijians. I have nothing more than having pride in being a Fijian,” he said.
More than 100 students and 200 civil servants from various ministries were part of the march procession during the opening of the celebration yesterday.
