People working in the tourism industry have been commended and encouraged to work together for the betterment of the country.

The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Faiyaz Siddiq Koya, said the Fijian Government was urging on the tourism industry to work together in making it the highest contributor to the economy.

He made the comments while officiating in the 31st annual Bilibili Race in Sigatoka yesterday.

“The Bilibili race epitomes what Fiji is – a nation that works together to achieve growth for our future generations – a nation for everyone – a nation where everyone is equal,” Mr Koya said.

The bilibili race in Sigatoka has become one of the signature events of the tourism calendar.

The brainchild of the event was Robert Kennedy who initiated the tournament in 1984 with a few resorts on the coral coast. Thirty –one years later the event has grown to become the biggest Fiji Day sporting event.

The minister thanked businesshouses for coming to support the event.

“It is wonderful to see resort management, staff and guests from Nadi hotels, the Coral Coast, Suva and even our academics from USP joining the local community like they’ve done in previous years to take part again,” he said.

Nineteen events, including fun run, board-walking, egg –throwing, waiter relay race and kayaking featured in the day-long event by the Sigatoka River.
