Copra Millers To Work With Agriculture Ministry

Copra Millers of Fiji Limited (CMFL) is planning to join hands with the Ministry of Agriculture to help revamp the Copra Industry.

Speaking during the CMFL annual general meeting chairman Raj Sharma said as a long term solution, CMFL plan to work in collaboration with the agriculture department to plant more coconut trees.

“More refinery and product diversification plans are in place as a short term solution. These products include Virgin Coconut Oil (VGO) and coconut water as refreshing drinks.”

Meanwhile, Agriculture technical officer Cakaudrove Nabuce said Government aims to plant more coconut trees around Fiji and set up nurseries in various sites such as Saqani, Wainigata and the Natewa areas in the province of Cakaudove.

He added that Government assists those coconut farmers who supply directly to copra millers for a consistence supply of copra.



Mr Sharma explained the Copra Industry till date has derived $70,000 in profit.

“We are at a sound financial performance so far but we have to meet with stakeholders and coconut farmers to hear their views on how to further revive the copra industry,” Mr Sharma said.

“This meeting helps find constraints faced by the farmers and stakeholders as well as making them aware of changes in the industry.”
