Fiji Sugar Corporation Assesses Lautoka Mill Processing Termination Date

Fiji Sugar Corporation is yet to determine the date the Lautoka Mill will terminate cane processing marking the end of the season.

FSC executive chairman, Abdul Khan, they are currently reviewing the date to end cane processing at the Lautoka Mill.

“We have to see just how much sugarcane is still out there to be harvested and processed,” he said.

FSC hopes to have the assessment done in the next week after which they will be able to predict the closing date for the Lautoka Mill.

Meanwhile, the Rarawai Mill is expected to terminate cane processing this Friday but this depends on the amount of cane supply.

Cane processed

Mr Khan has further indicated that the overall amount of cane processed so far was not as pleasing as the past year.

“We have crushed 1.77 million tonnes of sugar cane, that has been processed and we’ve made just over 210,000 tonnes of sugar,” he said.

“In terms of our recovery, we’re not as good as the past year mainly because our crop is not as good.

“The two dry seasons that we have had impacted on the quality of our crop.

“We are sitting at tonnes of cane to tonnes of sugar (TCTS) ratio of 8:3 whereas the past year we ended with a (TCTS) of 8.1.”

As for forecast next year, Mr Khan said they won’t make be setting any targets yet.

He said the difficulty was as the planting season comes ups, there is hope for rain which will help with germination and ultimately the amount of crop.
