Proceedings to include Guard of Honour, traditional farewell ceremony: Kurisiga

A grand farewell has been planned for the outgoing President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun, the chairman of the organising committee, Apakuki Kurusiga, said they had the full support of Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

To begin with for this solemn occasion, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), will mount a 100 person Guard of Honour, the last for Ratu Epeli as President.

“This will also be a military farewell for the outgoing President,” Mr Kurusiga said.

He said for the traditional farewell, the Tui Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua, had agreed for the people of Namosi to perform this ceremonial function.

Mr Kurusiga said he had been informed that this traditional ceremony was only done for the Tui Namosi and was very unique.

“I must thank the Tui Namosi for agreeing to this unique ceremony for the outgoing President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau,” he said.

Mr Kurusiga said the traditional guards would take over as soon as the President completed his inspection of the Guard of Honour.

“Armed with traditional spears they would escort the President to the ground within the Government House compound prepared for the traditional ceremony.”

The farewell he said would be broadcast live on FBC TV for all Fijians to witness.

Ratu Epeli emotional

Mr Kurisiga said when he went up to Government House to brief the President on the programme, he was emotional.

He approved the farewell programme.

Touch-up at Government House

The secretary to Government House, Pene Nonu, yesterday said the outgoing President had given specific instructions for some repair works to be done before incoming President Jioji Konrote moved in.

“Repair works will take a few weeks and when completed Mr Konrote would move in,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said Mr Konrote would be travelling from his residence at Namadi Heights to work at the President’s Office until all repair works were completed.

Ratu Epeli’s new residence

It is understood that Ratu Epeli would temporarily move into a Government quarters while his new residence is being renovated. It is speculated that the President will either move to his Milne Road property or to a family property at Caubati. Workmen have been busy working on the Caubati property.
