Fiji and China last night stood side by side on climate change and other issues as they celebrated 40 years of diplomatic relations.

Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhang Ping responded positively to a call by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on climate change.

Mr Bainimarama said: “We ask China to side with us in this struggle as we try to persuade the industrialised nations to embrace drastic cuts in carbon emissions.

Mr Zhang said: “Our Fiji friends should be rest assured that they will get the support in many ways from China on that specific issue.”

Mr Bainimarama said: “I am asking China and the other industrial nations not only to consider the disastrous consequences of failing to do what is necessary in Paris to arrest carbon emissions. I am also asking these nations to consider the positive consequences of embracing change themselves. To reconfigure their economies for a more sustainable energy future. To embrace the use of sustainable energy sources such as hydroelectric and solar power instead of fossil fuels and especially coal. For their own sakes, as much as for ours.”

Mr Zhang said: “We take that issue in a very serious manner and we understand the PM’s concerns, we understand his efforts to achieve some progress at the Paris climate change conference.

“And I think we share the same goals, and if you look at what China has done over the years, first of all we have tried to reduce carbon emissions and clean up the air and we have spent lots of efforts. We also have our volunteer contribution which is: By 2030 to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions by 60 per cent to 65 per cent on the level in 2015.

“So I think President Xi Jinping has announced that China will set up a fund which is about US$3.1billion to help the developing countries tackle climate change.

“We are doing our own part to contribute in the global effort to fight climate change.

“Climate change is a common challenge facing every country, but the effect is felt in different ways.”
