‘I have always wanted to play for Fiji’

With the Telecom Fijiana team looking to book a spot in the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, it will be a dream come true for former captain of the Australian Women’s 7s team, Rebecca Tavo.

The 32-year-old from Oinafa, Rotuma, was part of the 12 women announced yesterday to represent Fiji to the Oceania Women’s 7s qualifiers in New Zealand next week.

“I really believe in Fiji and I believe that we can do awesome things for our country. I’m very humbled to be named into the team.

“I’m very excited and nervous about next weekend because it’s a big job for us to qualify for the Olympics. This team is very fit and I have a lot of faith in this team.”

“I have always wanted to play for Fiji and I knew there was going to be a chance but I didn’t know when, so this is perfect timing.”

Tavo, who played with the Australian Women’s 7s team for five years, said being part of the Fijiana team was a very different experience compared to what she had been used to.

“I’m still learning their style of play and that is something that is much different compared to Australia.

“I know we can qualify because the way the girls have been training which has been two months now and we went through hard training, we are always there for each other and helping each other and it’s going to be like that next weekend,” she added.

“Being part of this team is very different compared to Australia. I feel at home, everything that the girls are doing. it could be as simple as devotion every morning or night, is something I love.”

The Oceania Women’s 7s will be held on November 14-15.
