The new President, Jioji Konousi Konrote said that he would be the ‘President for the people’.

Speaking to the Fiji Sun at his inauguration yesterday, he said he was happy and thanked the Prime Minister for the faith he had in nominating him to succeed Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

Mr Konrote said he had retired from politics in 2006 and was appointed by the Prime Minister to be the advisor to the Rotuma Council.

He won a seat in parliament in 2014 under the FijiFirst party and was appointed Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.

“I resigned after I was told by the Prime Minister that I would be his nominee for the President.

He said as President, this was the Almighty’s call on him to serve the country once more.

Mr Konrote said leadership for him was not new as he had formerly served as a diplomat, politician, Commander RFMF, Force Commander, UNIFIL and permanent secretary to name a few.

He thanked the former President, Ratu Epeli for the excellent work he had done during his term.

“I must admit that Ratu Epeli did a great job for the nation,” he said.

Mr Konrote said it would not be easy for him to step into the President’s shoes as Ratu Epeli had already set a very high standard of work. When asked if he would champion HIV/AIDS like the former President, he said he would not.

However, he urged all Fijians to support Ratu Epeli in advocating against HIV/AIDS.

Mr Konrote started in the high office of the President yesterday. He said he will continue living at his Namadi Heights residence in Suva until renovations to the Government House are completed.

As of yesterday, tight security surrounded his residence.
