Fiji To Work Closely With Red Cross Body To Build Capacity

Close co-operation including capacity-building for Fiji’s disciplined forces topped talks held today between the Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and the International Committee of the Red Cross vice-president, Christine Beerli.
The Attorney-General commended the work carried out by the ICRC in Fiji and the region, especially during times of natural disasters.
The minister also welcomed the ICRC’s decision to provide capacity-development assistance for those serving in the disciplinary forces including the Fiji Correction Services.
Ms Beerli said that the ICRC provided training for officials in various government institutions in over 40 countries including officials in the Correction Service on international standards and best practices.
During their discussions, the Attorney-General highlighted Fiji’s own commitment to adhering to international standards and best practices.
He pointed to Fiji’s decision to host the United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Right to Education.
The Attorney-General said the Special Rapporteur’s visit would assess and support the FijiFirst Government’s own efforts and initiatives to strengthen the universal right to education.
