Despite not being able to walk properly because of a deformity in both her feet, Eseta Biu did not let this stop her from pursuing excellence in her academic performance.

The Year Nine student, originally from Bukuya, Ba, received the Year Nine Dux Award during the Jasper Williams High School annual prizegiving in Lautoka yesterday.

“I feel proud of what I’ve achieved today and I thank God because He was my protector who helped me achieve this,” Eseta said.

“I also want to thank the students of the school because they cared for me and looked after me even though I am different from them.”

She also credited her achievements to her parents and their strong support for her.

“I’m looking forward to achieving this prize again next year,” she said.

Her mother Josevini Biu, 37, said she was proud of her daughter.

“She faced some difficulties in terms one and two in completing her tasks and asked me to get a laptop for her to assist her,” she said.

“I told her if she passed her exams with good marks then I would buy it and since then she has worked hard to achieve what she has today.”

Mrs Biu also thanked the school for assisting her daughter.

“She was always determined and used to wake up at 3.30am every morning to study and only stops studying on Saturdays,” she said.

“I’m so happy that she has come this far and we will always support her.”
