Following on from the launch in Suva, the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority launched at ASYCUDA World Fiji system in Lautoka yesterday.

The system is designed to quicken the process of customs clearance through internet access.

It is a web-based system which facilitates clearance of cargo, collection of tax for Government and data compliance as well.

The system was developed by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The system was launched at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka by FRCA chief executive, Jitoko Tikolevu.

Mr Tikolevu said all Government entities have always been encouraged to create an IT platform that would facilitate and make processes easy for the private sector.

He said, in this instance, this would be done by cutting the process time of cargo clearing from the usual three days to two hours.

“Delays mean extra costs for businesses and we really don’t want that,” he said.

“It’s really alarming for us that the independent verification analysis done  by the World Customs Organisation experts revealed that we were taking too long in the clearance of cargo through our documentation process.”

ASYCUDA National project team representative and senior customs officer Anare Filipe said stabilisation of the system would take six months.

“We have other ports as well that we will be introducing the system to. These are Savusavu, Levuka and Labasa ports which are still in our programme,” he said.

“We might introduce the system in the North next year so the system can be used all over Fiji.”
