Parents’ involvement in their child’s learning is important and plays a vital role in the teaching and learning process, says the Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy

He made this remark at the public consultations at the Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College in Nadi on Tuesday.

Mr Reddy also confirmed that the ministry would launch Pillar IV later in the year.

“Pillar IV is a framework which will basically increase the involvement of parents in their child’s education,” Mr Reddy said.

He said teachers had come across situations where parents refer disciplinary issues of their children to teachers.

“Disciplinary actions are forwarded to teachers, whether it is in school or outside school,” he said.

“Parents tend to forget that they are the first teachers therefore the ministry will be introducing Pillar IV so that parents are also able to solve issues.”

Mr Reddy also mentioned that as parents, individuals should set aside time for their kids,” he said.

“Parents are the first teachers and they cannot withdraw or shirk away from this responsibility as the child progresses to formal education.”

Mr Reddy said the areas the ministry would be stressing on are improvement of student literacy levels and English knowledge, critical thinking, development of entrepreneurial mind and preparing students for the ‘digital era’.

He also confirmed that Professional Development sessions on leadership and administration will be conducted throughout Fiji to strengthen leadership roles in schools.

Mr Reddy mentioned that the ministry would keep working towards excellence.

“Our quest to raise the bar of academic excellence will continue and we will continue to search for new and innovative ways to deliver education in Fiji which will ensure every child has an opportunity to participate in our education system,” he said.
