Landowners Plead To Stop Gravel Extraction

The landowners and businessmen in Navua now want a complete stop to the extraction of gravel in the Navua River.

Speaking on their behalf from Navua, the operator of Discover Fiji Tours, William Danford said they were now looking forward to the stakeholders meeting in Navua soon.

He   said it was time they put their acts together and be united in their fight to stop gravel extraction because it was affecting them.

The extractors, he said, were getting a lot of cash but the landowners were getting peanuts.

Mr Danford said he had seen another gravel extractor who claimed he had the consent of the landowner.

He said they were now united in trying to stop gravel extraction.

“What we used to get from the river in terms of food is no longer there.”

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Malakai Finau has yet to see the report on the meeting in Navua on gravel extraction last Wednesday.

He said he would make a decision once he looked at the report.

Mr Danford said he was not aware of this meeting.

He said at the stakeholders meeting would be a good time to make clarifications on the extraction.
