Polls start today in Vanuatu with our representatives playing a key role

The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat yesterday conducted its final briefing for its Observer Group before their deployment to their observation areas today.

The Fijian delegation comprising former Fijian President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Fijian Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem and chief administrative officer Foreign Affairs Navneel Sharma, will be deployed in Efate urban and rural constituencies for the one-day Vanuatu snap elections. Other members of the MSG Observer Group will also be deployed in Efate and the Santo prefecture.

A record number of 28 political parties will contest the snap elections for the Parliament of the Republic of Vanuatu and the Independents made-up the 29th grouping for the 52-seat legislature. A total of 261 candidates will contest the snap elections with an estimated 200,159 registered voters.

The Observer Group will be responsible for monitoring, assessing, and observing the conduct of the elections in accordance with international and regional standards for elections taking into account Vanuatu’s Constitution, and other relevant legal documents as well as other guidelines and terms of reference provided by the Vanuatu authorities to guide the work of the international observers.

Other international observers from the European Union, China, United States, Pacific Islands Forum and the Commonwealth are also present in Vanuatu.
