Peru promotes satellite control systems for foreign fishing vessels

In a move to combat illegal and clandestine fishing, Fiji and other Pacific island nations could soon use the satellite control systems on foreign fishing vessels.

This was after Peru Fishing and Aquaculture deputy minister Juan Carlos Requejo announced that they had proposed it to all member countries of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO). And that is for SPRFMO to register International Maritime Organisation (IMO) ship identification numbers.

Peru had used the satellite control systems to prevent foreign extraction of giant squids and bonito fish in Peruvian jurisdictional waters.

The proposal was fully supported by the Fourth Commission Meeting of SPRFMO, held in Valdivia, Chile.

“By complying with the measure, Produce and the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard—Dicapi will ensure that no foreign extraction of giant squid and bonito fish would occur within our jurisdictional waters,” the deputy minister stated.

“This will also help detect foreign vessels conducting illegal fishing,” he continued.

IMO numbers are issued under authority of the International Maritime Organisation- a specialised agency of the United Nations agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
