Standing in queues to buy pre-paid electricity tokens from Fiji Electricity Authority vendors will now be a thing of the past.

All you need is a mobile phone that has sufficient funds and access to Vodafone’s M-PAISA.

FEA Chief Executive Hasmukh Patel, while launching the product, said they had been working on options to make pre-paid electricity tokens more accessible to customers.

He said the new option not only provides convenience to their customers but would also save cost.

“Finally, we decided to use SMS (Short Message Services) services for pre-pay electricity token purchasing.

“Post pay billing service becomes a very costly operation to maintain for FEA as we go deeper into the rural areas. If our customers did not pay their bills on time, disconnection and reconnection becomes a logistical challenge and is also very costly and a time consuming exercise.”

Mr Patel said pre-pay electricity would be the best option for remote rural customers as there is no need for disconnection and reconnection.

“When you run out of your cash power credit, you can always buy additional credit using Vodafone’s M-PAiSA on your mobile phone. Once the purchase is made, customers receive a 20 digit electricity token in a text message which they are required to key into their FEA prepay meter to connect to the FEA Power grid.”

Vodafone Fiji chief executive Pradeep Lal said people are now beginning to appreciate the convenience and cost saving that M-PAiSA provides as an effective payment option.

He said: “For those FEA customers who bank with Westpac, this service is even more convenient because they do not need to visit an M-PAiSA agent to deposit money in their M-PAISA account.

“Our aim as a business is to add value, bring about greater efficiency and improved productivity through the use of technology and to empower our customers to have greater freedom to do things they love.”

The service is available free of charge to FEA customers.

Vodafone and FEA will conduct joint Roadshows in areas where FEA customers are predominantly on prepay electricity to register and educate customers about this new service.

To use the service, customers dial *181# to access the M-PAiSA menu, select option 7 for Bill pay and then select option 2 for FEA and follow the simple steps to complete the transaction.  Customers need to be registered for the M-PAiSA service and hold a balance in their M-PAiSA account to use the service..
