Vishal Kumar of Qarawalu Settlement in Vuna, Taveuni says Tropical Cyclone Winston has caused massive destruction on the island.

“I went around Vuna district and about 80 to 90 per cent of the houses are destroyed in the southern part of the island,” Mr Kumar said.

“There are 63 households in Qarawalu Settlement and all the houses are completely destroyed except for 11 which are partly damaged.

“Most of the residents have completely lost everything and they have made temporary structures and staying in it with their families. There is also a communication breakdown on the island.”

Mr Kumar said they could not get in touch with people in the central and northern divisions from the island.

Mr Kumar said the farms on the island were completely destroyed and people were living on whatever they had.

He said about three to four families had taken shelter at his home.

“There is no water and power supply on the island,” he said.

Mr Kumar said livestock however were safe on the island and South Taveuni primary and secondary schools also suffered damage.

He said school children had lost all their school belongings and some families had taken shelters in the school but they had to move.

“There were no reports of flood in Vuna district,” he said.

Mr Kumar, who is a health officer at Vuna District Health Centre, said seven people were were treated for injuries and sent home.

Mr Kumar said medical professionals at the health centre did a very good job in looking after the injured despite the centre suffering some damage.

“Fiji has experienced so many cyclones but Tropical Cyclone Winston was the worst,” he said.

He said a lot of families on the island were really in need of assistance right now.
