A family in Drasa, Lautoka is devastated after Cyclone Winston claimed the life of their father.

Taniela Voreqe, 43, who was the only breadwinner of his family, died while trying to keep the door of their house closed at the height of Cyclone Winston last Saturday.

His eldest son, Luke Nacei, said his father was leaning against the door which was forced open by strong winds.

Mr Nacei said the door was blown away into the house and the impact caused his father’s death.

“It was around 9pm. The family was seated inside the house. At that time the wind was very strong and it kept opening our door,” he said

How it happend

“So my dad decided to lean against the door so that it would stay closed.

“Then suddenly we heard a loud sound, and my father flew to the middle of the house.”

Mr Nacei said the last words that came out from his father’s mouth was: “Na watiqu qai maroroi iratou na gone” (my wife safeguard our children).

“We called his name and try to resuscitate him but it was of no use. The telephone lines were down, so we were not able to reach police or call ambulance until 9am Sunday morning.”

Mr Nacei said he would miss his father who was a loyal and loving man.

Mr Voreqe was a seasonal worker at the Fiji Sugar Corporation in Rarawai,Ba and also worked part-time for a crab company in Ba.

Mr Voreqe is survived by his wife and four children.

The funeral is scheduled this Friday in Tavakubu Cemetery in Lautoka.
