New Permanent Secretary for Communication and Information Technology Ewan Perrin has been in the North. One of the things he has been looking at could be good news for telecommunication.

This is a possible submarine sea cable linking our two main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. It would open up all sorts of better services including high-speed Internet and quality voice and data transmission.

During his first two-day official visit to Vanua Levu, Mr Perrin looked at possible sites to see how the undersea cable can be connected from Viti Levu.

During a press conference at Macuata House in Labasa yesterday Mr Perrin said this project will benefit everyone in Fiji. It comes parallel with the development of a submarine sea cable link from Samoa.

Mr Perrin said: “According to the most likely design the undersea cables will come from Samoa to Suva and an extra cable will be used to connect from Suva to Vanua Levu.

“This several million dollar project funded by World Bank would be done in stages and would take a period of 12 to 18 months.

“The early stages would be to carry out environment impact assessment and survey because we don’t want our environment to be affected in any way.

“One of the purposes of my visit to Vanua Levu was to see some possible sites and I have been to Savusavu and other surrounding areas.

“This is the first time we have proposed a sea cable project which promises high speed internet connectivity for the Northern Division and Fiji as a whole.”

Mr Perrin said the vision is to improve services to citizens and Government.

“We should be well informed, vigilant and connected,” he said.
