When re-imaging the individual categories for the 19th ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards, the Board of Trustees sought a fresh way to acknowledge tourism professionals across all levels of service and management.

The Trust’s aim with the Tourism Leader category was to seek and recognise tourism professionals who demonstrate outstanding contribution to Fijian tourism over many years.

The category is open to Executive Management and owner operators of tourism service providers in the private sector.

Unlike the other two individual categories, applications were invited from not only Fiji citizens but also Fiji residents.

Applications were received from managers of a diverse range of properties and operations within Fiji and all outlining outstanding contributions to Fiji tourism by the candidates.

The first recipient

ANZ Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards first Tourism Leader is Peter Hopgood, general manager of the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort.

Mr Hopgood took up his position in 2009 having started his hospitality career in Australia in 1980. He had been general manager of various hotels and resorts before coming to Fiji.

As general manager at Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, he has assiduously worked to strengthen the resorts’ market position.

Working actively with an Australian public relations company to not only steadily increase guest numbers, particularly those who are return visitors, but to also broaden the appeal of Fiji as a destination to the world.

During Mr Hopgood’s tenure, he has doubled the number of Fijians employed at the resort.

He also worked to ensure that guests gain a deeper appreciation of the unique culture of Fiji through traditional handicrafts, storytelling and other traditional activities.

Beyond strengthening the resorts position, Peter is proactive in initiating a host of projects which benefit the local people.

The initiatives are diverse across assisting schools, running educational workshops, such as Drowning Prevention, and many schemes to improve health services and facilities in the Sigatoka region.
