Fiji’s top rugby referee James Bolabiu has been named in the 12-member referees’ panel for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August.

He will be joined on the panel by renowned international referees like Craig Joubert and Rasta Rasivhenge.

Bolabiu who is currently officiating in the Women’s Sevens Series was overwhelmed by the news yesterday and said this was a dream come true.

Speaking to SUNsports, Bolabiu said he is honoured to represent his country as a referee to the world’s biggest sporting event.

“Firstly I want to thank the Lord for this talent that he has given me, World Rugby for this great once in a lifetime opportunity and also Fiji Rugby for the long time support. This is such a dream come true I’m grateful for this opportunity and it’s going to be one of the best achievements in my refereeing career.”

Being the first Fijian to officiate in the Olympics he wishes to be an inspiration to the young people of Fiji that there as there is always an opportunity out there if only they work towards it.

The famous face on our rugby grounds has also dedicated his appointment to his mother Mereoni Pataisia.

“This is my Mother’s Day gift. My father passed away when I was little and from then on it was always her support that kept me going.

“She has always been there for me and my only wish is for her to proudly watch her son be the first Fijian to live his dream and officiate in the Olympics,” he said.

Bolabiu, has been officiating in the Women’s Sevens Series and made the cut after being recalled by World Rugby last year.
