A member of the Rava Settlement has told Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama that her family wants to relocate before the next tropical cyclone hits.

Louisa Miller, 24, talked to the Prime Minister during his visit to Rava Settlement in Savusavu on Tuesday. She said that her forefathers and the Hazelman family have been living in the settlement for over 100 years.

“My families want to relocate to higher ground near the settlement but we do not have access to road,” Ms Miller said.

“We have submitted a request to the Cakaudrove Provincial office to assist us by making road access of 1.4 kilometres inland and they have been helpful.”

Cakaudrove Provincial administrator Jovesa Rokonai informed Mr Bainimarama that Fulton Hogan Hiways have carried out an inspection and he was waiting for their response.

“In a few years time, the sea water level will rise and after experiencing the wrath of Tropical Cyclone Winston its better we relocate now,” Ms Miller said.

Mr Bainimarama told her: “Your idea to relocate is very good. It’s good to relocate soon before the next tropical cyclone.”

He said his office would follow up with Fiji Roads Authority on her request. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
