Tropical Disturbance 17F with an associated trough of low pressure is gradually moving south towards the Fiji Group.

Fiji Meteorological Services director, Ravind Kumar said associated cloud and rain was expected to affect the group till Sunday.

“At this stage the low pressure system has a low chance to develop into a tropical cyclone over the Fiji waters,” he said.

“A heavy rain warning is now in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and Lomaiviti group, half of Eastern Viti Levu.

“Occasional rain, heavy at times and a few thunderstorms becoming frequent from today; localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding.”

Mr Kumar said a strong wind warning remained in force for all Fiji waters.

“The general public is advised that we are still in the tropical cyclone and wet season; high variability in weather can be expected and severe weather cannot be ruled out at this time of the year.

“Therefore all communities are advised to remain alert and prepared at all times; furthermore take forecast, warnings and advisories seriously and make informed decisions,” he said.
