A specialized team from India has arrived in Fiji to assist with the restoration of power to areas affected by Cyclone Winston and assess Fiji’s long-term energy needs.

The team was deployed following a meeting between the Attorney-General and Minister for Finance, Hon Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and India’s Minister of State with Independent Charge for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, Hon. Shri Piyus Goyal, held last month in Delhi.

The team from India will work closely with the Fiji Electricity Authority and the National Disaster Management Office to identify a mix of cost effective renewable energy sources most suited to Fiji’s environment and climate.

The team will then report back to the Indian Government on where to target future assistance to Fiji’s energy sector.

The specialist team includes Mr Atul Kumar Agarwal, General Manager of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Mr Mukesh Khanna, General Manager of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, Mr Rajesh Sharma, General Manager of National Hydro Power Corporation Limited and Mr Padam Narayan, Deputy Manager of Solar Energy Corporation of India.

“We are deeply grateful for India’s support in addressing the long-term challenges faced by our energy sector. We are keen to continue forging partnerships with our friends around the globe to develop sustainable and resilient infrastructure to meet our growing energy demands,” said the AG.
