Side to gauge performance in this tournament for the revived Saunaka 7s

The McDonald’s Saunaka 7s team is ready for a grand show at the 29th Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s at Prince Charles Park in Nadi today.

The side is laced with the likes of Inia Naqia and Peceli Kato, who is son of former national and Nadi rep Laisenia Kato.

Saunaka Rugby Club chairman Ponijese Rayasi said the team was looking forward to the tournament.

“This is our first tournament this year as we have been preparing since January.

“We will use this tournament to gauge our performance during our own revived Saunaka 7s early next month,” Rayasi said.

The Naqia-captained side is in Pool Four alongside Lote Rasiga’s MH Red Rock, Nadawa Young Boys and Speedwing.

“We will take each match like it’s the final. We respect the teams in our pool but it will be a good test for the boys,” he said.

Rayasi added they were contemplating to field two teams but opted to field only one which is expected to be a strong one.

Saunaka 7s team, in the early 90s, was a team to reckon under the watchful eyes of the late national rep/coach Ratu Jo Sovau.

The side takes on Nadawa Young Boys in their first match at 9.30am today.
