Our Vodafone Fijian 7s side’s achievement in Hong Kong was recognised by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama during last night’s Fiji Sports Awards at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

Bainimarama commended team coach Ben Ryan and the players for a job well done.

“I want to begin by paying tribute to our rugby sevens team, who have lifted the spirits of the entire nation at a very challenging time with their magnificent win in Hong Kong,” he said.

“Vinaka vakalevu, Ben Ryan. Vinaka vakalevu to every single player!”

He said rugby had certainly brought the people’s spirits together to set aside their worries for a few precious moments to cheer on our players.

“I don’t know whether you saw it but there was a wonderful photo on Facebook of people watching the game on a television set high on the hill over in the Yasawas.

“It captured perfectly the Fijian passion for rugby and its importance in our national life. God knows we needed something to distract us after the trauma of the last few weeks cyclone and flooding. Wishing our men well in the upcoming games in Singapore this weekend.”

Bainimarama added though our sevens team delivered with a nail biting display they showed what made them the best sevens team in the world.

“Now more than ever, every Fijian joins me to deliver our warmest congratulations and you go on to Singapore and beyond with our support and best wishes of the entire day.”

The Vodafone Fijian 7s team won the 2015 Team of the Year Award.
