There were upsets in the first round of pool matches of the Singapore 7s yesterday. Leading the charge was France with Fijian-born winger Virimi Vakatawa as they trounced New Zealand 24-0. Then in came Argentina as they edged out Australia 12-7 before Japan ran away with a 26-19 win over Wales.

Then in a repeat of the 2016 Las Vegas tournament, Samoa rose to the occasion to beat World Sevens Series leaders Vodafone Fijian 7s team 28-14.

Samoa scored two tries in the first half through Tomasi Alosio who brushed aside Emosi Mulevoro’s tackle to score under the post and with a Samoa Toloa spectacular touchdown after beating Semi Kunatani to the try line.

Trailing 14-0, the Vodafone Fijians continued to commit unforced errors but a stroke of luck saw playmaker Vatemo Ravouvou score their first try under the post as they narrowed the deficit 14-7.

Coach Ben Ryan reminded the players to have their eyes on the ball, reset fast as they understand the pressure applied by their Pacific rivals.

Samoa continued to dominate and shut Fiji out in the second half through a try to captain Fa’alemiga Selesele. But it was Alosio who scored his second try and push the game out of Fiji’s reach. The Fijians managed to pull a try back through forward Nemani Nagusa.
