The continuous rainfall from last week and has left the Shiri Guru Nanak Primary School underwater in Labasa yesterday.

School Committee president Guranam Singh said the flooding resulted from rainfall on Saturday night.

“During the continuous rain last night, I was worried for the school but the good teachers informed the students to take their books home and clear their desks before the weekend,” Mr Singh said.

He said the classroom just needed to be cleaned when the flood waters receded.

“The committee members came in this morning to assess the school facilities,” he said.

“(The) 17 classrooms plus school office including headteacher’s office, library, computer lab and washroom room facilities is all under water this morning (yesterday).”

Mr Singh said the school located was beside a large drain which he thinks responsible authorities should inspect.

“Every time it rains the drain is always flooded, so teachers have warned students to stay away from the drain,” Mr Singh said.

He said as soon as flood water receded the committee would clean the classrooms, so classes could start again as soon as possible.

“The school has been closed from two recent tropical cyclones and the school cannot afford to close again after this flash flooding,” he said.

Meanwhile, Natua, Seaqaqa also experienced flooding.
