Cane Producers in Drasa Sector in Lautoka are expecting a decrease in the overall cane which will be harvested during this coming cane processing season.

Lalit Kumar, Vice Chairman of Lautoka Cane Producers Association who is in charge of Drasa Sector said farmers were expecting loss of crop after Tropical Cyclone Winston and the flash flooding which followed.

“Crops in this area were damaged to an extent whereby the farmers are now expecting a decrease in yield up to 50 per cent less compared to previous years,” he said.

He also stressed Drasa Sector was amongst one of the areas which is known for the high cane production in Lautoka.

“The area in previous years used to harvest 85,000 tonnes of sugarcane but as of this year, we are expecting to harvest 47,000 tonnes of cane.”

The Cane Producers Association is looking at organising a workshop or forum soon for the affected farmers. This would help them get important information in regards to the crushing season this year.
