Provisional visitor arrival numbers released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics revealed an increase of 9.7 per cent for March compared to a year earlier.

Total visitor arrivals for March this year was 55,977 compared to 51,047 the past year in March.

Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association President, Dixon Seeto, said the numbers were a result of the momentum which was carried on from the very healthy past year.

He said this was a good sign that we will probably ride out the natural disasters.

He acknowledged this had been made possible through the efforts of the Tourism Action Group, Tourism Fiji and all the industry partners getting together.

But, Mr Seeto said it was one thing getting the bigger numbers however, revenue and yield was another issue.

He said: “Perhaps in getting the numbers, it would be the revenue and the yield we would have to sacrifice on.

“Hopefully this will be for short to medium term because in the long term, we need the numbers and the yield to get to where we were last year.”

While visitor arrivals increased from New Zealand, Australia, China and the rest of Asia, the other markets recorded a decrease.

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 74.2 per cent of total arrivals, 9.2 per cent came to visit their friends and relatives, 4.9 per cent came for business purposes while 11.7 per cent visited Fiji for other reasons.
