The Fiji Crop and Livestock Council (FCLC) has cemented a bond of information sharing with four regional agriculture organisations through a Memorandum of Understanding.

Council chairman Simon Cole last week sealed Fiji’s involvement.

The MOU was signed with the Chargé de Mission for the Regional Technical Cooperation for the New Caledonia Chamber of Agriculture, François Japiot.

With 70 years of experience in the agriculture sector, New Caledonia pilots the network and is a model for its Pacific partners.

“This concept of farmer associations and commodity associations is not new to Fiji and we’re certainly not the most advanced in this field. It’s clear that New Caledonia has a lot to offer its partners,” Mr Cole said.

“In that spirit of cooperation we’ve signed an MOU to unite Fiji, French Polynesia, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Wallis & Futuna.

“The whole idea is to share ideas and information, implement regional projects to develop technical and economic exchanges, and possibly take on regional issues such as the protection of kava as a Pacific Island crop.”

Mr Cole is expected to pay the New Caledonia Chamber of Agriculture a courtesy visit in June to observe and learn about the systems and structures that has made CANC tick for over a decade.

“FCLC hopes to draw on the type of services the Chamber provides, funding mechanisms they have in place, how they interact with government and the private sector, even their agricultural insurance schemes,” he said.

Furthermore, the New Caledonia government in March donated $140,000 to FCLC.

The funds will be used to rehabilitate commodity farmers, who were affected by Cyclone Winston, and support initiatives from farmer associations.

This operation will be conducted in close collaboration with the Chamber of Agriculture of New Caledonia.
