Gold-medal-winning Assistant Minister reminds team about preparing well for Games

Paralympic gold medallist and Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports Iliesa Delana will accompany Team Fiji to the Rio Olympics in August.

Delana confirmed to SUNsports yesterday: “Yes, I will be going to Rio as a Government official to support the athletes’ participation.”

The Nadrala Village, Nadroga, native won a gold medal in the F42 high jump during the 2012 London Paralympic Games and became a national hero. He said for this year’s games preparation is paramount.

“The main thing is preparation. From my experience it was a 10 years preparation that I won that gold.

“If an athlete wants to qualify for the Games, they will need to prepare well because preparing an athlete to qualify is the hardest part.

“I congratulate all athletes and teams that have qualified for the Games,” Delana said.

Atmosphere

Delana said the atmosphere will be different and one could only be able to describe it on the day of competition.

“The Olympics is a different atmosphere for all sportsmen and sportswomen. Words can’t describe it but will only be described on the day.

Advice to athletes

“We can’t change the result at the end of the day, but the results will depend on how they prepare mentally, physically and spiritually.

“(I) Wish all the athletes the best in their performance in Rio and enjoy the Games,” he said.

To date the teams or individuals from our nation who have qualified for the Olympics in Rio are Rugby 7s men and women, the U23 football team, Team Fiji Shooter Glen Kable, Sally Yee from Table Tennis and Robert Elder from Fiji Archery.
