Land Transport Authority (LTA) has recorded five cases of underage children driving on our roads.

Out of the five cases, four cases are recorded in Suva and one in Nadi.

LTA chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva said: “The age group of these underage children driving ranged between 12 to 15 years.

“We are really concerned about the incident where a 13-year-old boy was allegedly driving to the shop when the car hit another vehicle at Votua Street, Samabula in Suva last weekend,” he said.

Mr Tuinaceva said some months ago LTA brought underage children driving issue in the media and they appealed to parents to play their part by being responsible and ensure that their children’s whereabouts on the road, were monitored.

“We have voiced our concern because we know these children don’t  just come and drive like that, they have been trained and assisted by their parents and that’s why they know how to drive,” Mr Tuinaceva said.

“There are parents who are doing this and it’s wrong. This shows that some parents are irresponsible,” he said.

Mr Tuinaceva said the LTA supported what Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho had said earlier that this was a serious matter involving parental responsibility.

“We believe there are more similar unreported cases,” he said.

Mr Tuinaceva said in the case of the five underage children driving, the LTA had called their parents and have spoken to them and parents from the Nadi incident were denying, trying to cover up.

“We know there are some people who are hiding these issues but they need to speak up,” he said.
